SEND - Accessing Theory Test Support

At Disability Driving Instructors - there are a variety of aids available to help you study for the theory test. Books have been specially designed with illustrations to help you understand and remember the necessary information, Audio Books are available for you to listen to rather than having to read, flash cards can be used as memory joggers, there are specially designed computer apps available, one-to-one theory sessions via Zoom can be arranged, theory test training video courses have been introduced and some classroom courses are also available.

Dyslexia and learning your theory test - what support is out there

If you have a reading or learning difficulty, disability or health condition you could request for:

  • extra time to take the test

  • someone to read what’s on the screen and record your answers

  • someone to reword the questions for you

https://www.gov.uk/theory-test/reading-difficulty-disability-or-health-condition

You can get this support during your theory test if you send proof that you have reading difficulties.
You will be told how to send proof when you book your theory test.
This can be an email, letter or report from:
a teacher or other educational professional
a doctor or medical professional
an occupational therapist
an online dyslexia screening product
I have put together a draft letter that you can edit and send to your School or Cllege to access your SEND history.

There is then an additional letter to edit, which you can send to DVSA along with your evidence when booking your theory test where you can highlight the support you require.

I hope it helps you as it has helped others in the past. If you don’t ask - you don’t get.
